At Newbold Church of England Primary School, we believe that science is a gateway to curiosity, discovery, and understanding the world around us. Our science curriculum is designed to inspire children to ask questions, explore ideas, and develop a lifelong love of learning through hands-on experiences and real-world connections.
Our science teaching follows the National Curriculum for England, covering key areas such as:
- Biology – plants, animals, habitats, and the human body
- Chemistry – materials, states of matter, and changes
- Physics – forces, light, sound, electricity, and space.
Each topic is taught in a way that is age-appropriate, engaging, and inclusive, with opportunities for children to work scientifically by observing, investigating, predicting, and recording their findings.
Our science curriculum encompasses the aims of the National Curriculum overview.
We use White Rose Education's science scheme. This scheme provides a clear spiral curriculum to enable children revisit key knowledge and skills throughout their primary school journey.
The children complete recap and recall activities at the start of each lesson, whether this is verbally with younger children, or written as they progress further up school. Each recap may cover information from the previous lesson / topic or even previous years. This helps to embed the children's learning.
Here is the structure of the science curriculum from Year 1 to Year 6.
